Sri Lanka has a rich and exotic variety of wildlife and a long tradition of conservation. We have multiple national parks that are home to varieties of elephants, leopards, sloth bears, wild boar, porcupines, sandbur, deer, monkeys, wild buffalo, ant-eaters, civet cats, jackals, mongoose, Loris (unique to Sri Lanka), several varieties of lizards, squirrels, reptiles, amphibians and a whole host of bird life. Each park has its own facilities.

Home to over 200 species of birds, including rare and migratory birds, the Kumana National Park is just over 10 km away from Arugambay. It can be reached via the Panama – Kudumbigala Sanctuary.

Kumana Bird Sanctuary is nationally and internationally recognized as an important wetland habitat for local and migratory wading birds. Here you can flocks of painted storks, spot-billed pelicans, white ibis, flamingos, and a multitude of over bird life.

Kumana is best visited during May, June, and July. The mangroves of the Kumana Villu, a 200-hectare natural swamp lake, which is fed by the Kumbukkan Oya, are filled with birds at this time. Popular birds spotted in the park include pelicans, painter’s stork, spoonbills, white ibis, and herons. Hoards of wildlife also inhabit the park, among them, leopards, elephants, deer, foxes, wild boar, and sloth bears.
